Gabi Shull was 9 years old when she got injured during skating. The girl was taken for an X-ray with which the doctors diagnosed her with osteosarcoma. This terrible diagnosis is a type of bone cancer which was formed on Gaby’s knee.
Gaby was always dreaming of becoming a ballerina, and from childhood she was trying to reach that goal. But after a three-month course of chemotherapy, the doctors were forced to amputate the part of the girl’s leg.
Today Gaby is 15 years old and she has an ability to do what she likes. All this became possible thanks to the revolutionary surgery, known as rotational plastic. Surgeons removed the knee affected by cancer returning part of her lower leg back, rotating it by 180 degrees. This amputation looks pretty daunting, but provides greater mobility in the future.
This type of operation has allowed the girl to wear a prosthesis and dance like her healthy peers-dancers.
“It was very painful. I was afraid to put the weight on the injured leg. It took me about a year to learn how to move without assistance, and another year, to learn how to dance on the stage “- Gaby said.
Despite the amputation of her leg, Gaby does not lose hope and keeps training herself. She takes part in various competitions and inspires the children around the world who are struggling with cancer.
Gaby’s courage and persistence are admirable!
